Cappadocia

Cappadocia

When a dream of seeing reality~

Why I choose to explain about Cappadocia?
Because I am so interest about the topography and I hope someday I will go there 😊

Okay, back to the topic...

Have you ever heard about the Cappadocia?

Cappadocia is a historical region in Central Anatoli l, largely around 5 provinces of Turkey.

Cappadocia, a semi-arid region in central Turkey, is known for its distinctive “fairy chimneys,” tall, cone-shaped rock formations clustered in Monks Valley, Göreme and elsewhere. Other notables sites include Bronze Age homes carved into valley walls by troglodytes (cave dwellers) and later used as refuges by early Christians. The 100m-deep Ihlara Canyon houses numerous rock-face churches.

UNESCO World Heritage Site inscription: 1985

Cappadocia is an underground city. It has so many relief from stone. The stone is so artristic and the topography is so amazing. Many films made in this place because of the topography.
Cappadocia also the historical site Christianity.

We can go there with plane or train from Istanbul. Cappadocia is the place with so many story. My favorite story is about Fairy Chimneys in Cappadocia. Here is the story :

The Story Behind Cappadocia’s Fairy Chimneys
Cappadocia’s famous ‘fairy chimneys’, whose carved out surfaces change color with every sunset, make for a surreal landscape of towering rock formations. But how did these strange natural growths emerge? We took a look at Cappadocia’s story.

The rock formations that have made Cappadociaone of the most popular destinations in Turkeyemerged due to a geological process that began millions of years ago. Ancient volcanic eruptions blanketed the region in thick ash, which later solidified into a soft rock called ‘tuff’. When the natural forces of wind and water (erosion) did their work, only the harder elements were left behind to form the fairy chimneys that can be seen today stretching as far as 130 feet into the sky.

However, it was also the wonder of human ingenuity that gave Cappadocia its magical aesthetic. During the Roman period, persecuted Christians fled to Cappadocia (more specifically the town of Göreme), and soon came to the realization that tuff was malleable in nature. The inhabitants set about to build a network of handmade caves, living quarters, churches, stables, and storehouses, all dug into that soft rock. Today, the stables with handles used to tether animals, walls with holes meant for air circulation, and blackened walls that were once the kitchens, still remain speaking of a past where people spent their lives within the honeycombed network of hand-built rock abodes.

Underground cities also had to be built due to the possibility of hostile forces discovering their refuge. Almost ten stories deep and connected by narrow passages, these subterranean cities could hide as many as 10,000 people at a time. Ventilation shafts were hidden as wells, while large rolling stone doors were put in place to protect entrances.

The churches of Göreme are also worth a mention on their own right because of the beautiful frescoes that have survived the often unforgiving passage of time. One of the best examples is the Dark Church in Göreme, a monastic compound built in the 11th century, whose walls are covered with colorful and intricate scenes from the New Testament and stunningly well preserved.

Once a refuge, the inspiring carved rocks of Cappadocia are now a tourist destination where hot air balloon tours allow visitors to gaze down upon this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Some of the cave dwellings have also been converted into boutique hotels where cave rooms offer comfort with cozy
fireplaces and gorgeous views.

My favorite thing is we can see the Cappadocia from the hot air balloons. It seems like we can get a new different feel with the hot air balloon.
These are the pictures of Cappadocia :
